Workshop Leader:
Brad Rathgeber
and Molly Rumsey
How do you create the dynamic environment of
an independent school classroom online?
In this workshop, Brad Rathgeber and Molly
Rumsey, the Director and former Interim Director
of the Online School for Girls, will give
workshop participants the beginnings of the
tool-kits needed to create interactive,
engaging, collaborative online coursework that
follows the independent school model. This
workshop will begin before the conference
starts, with an online activity that will help
participants to understand the landscape of
online education. When at the conference,
participants will be introduced to pedagogical
approaches to online education, giving them a
chance to discuss approaches and come away with
some understanding of an independent school
approach to online education. Participants will
also learn about effective tools for delivery of
online courses, including Learning Management
Systems, collaborative video and text tools, and
web 2.0 tools.
This Institute will be divided into four parts:
"Setting the Landscape of Online Education for
Independent Schools;" "The Challenges of
Creating Rich Online Courses;" "Matching the
Mission;" and "The Nuts and Bolts." Prior to
coming to ASB Un-Plugged, Institute participants
will be asked to watch a short video lecture on
the landscape of online learning and its impact
on independent schools, and read a set of
Critical Questions for Online Learning developed
by NAIS. This work (approximately 2 hours) will
prepare participants for engaging in discussions
about online learning while at ASB Un-Plugged,
and will allow participants to get to the stage
of being able to discover and evaluate
technology needed by the end of the Institute.
While in Mumbai, Institute participants will
begin by addressing the challenges presented
with online learning, first by analyzing an
online learning courses/classes that have not
been overly successful and then trying to
discover what would have made the courses work
better. From there, participants will spend time
working to understand how technology today can
help schools meet their school’s mission with
online education, and what implications this has
on the learning program (both positive and
negative) for their school. And, finally,
participants will get into the "nuts and bolts"
of an online learning program - the technology
itself. Institute participants will receive a
number of tools to try out in a hands-on way,
and will be asked to evaluate those tools given
principles discussed earlier in the Institute.
